Powder for the Last Day
March 28, 2008
by Snow Hog
On the last day a slight chance of snow was predicted, what we got was six to eight inches.
After spending most of the week on green runs the girls were ready for fresh powder.
"Where are we going skiing next year?"
"Where are the biscuits they said would be up here?"
I love skiing in fresh powder but for most of the group this was out of the ordinary. Snowboards as a rule have more friction than skis. This presents a problem in flat areas were skis keep going, boarders come to a screeching halt. Add fresh snow to the equation and you've got some unhappy campers. As long as your on steep terrain this is not an issue. Thankfully everyone had goggles and proper gear but our nine year old's outer gear wasn't waterproof enough for a boarder. All boarders spend more time on the ground than a comparable skier.
Since this was a late season snow it was quite wet and stuck to your clothing. Just before noon we found a warming hut and hatched a plan to go back to the condo, dry our clothes, eat and head back out in the afternoon. This turned out to be a good move.
Everyone had a good time skiing these slopes. Next trip will just be Luke, Loranne and myself so we will most likely fly to some other spot next year but sooner or later we will return to Winter Park. The next day we drove home with the remainder of the trip being mostly uneventful. We did however, stop by Salina, Kansas Red Lobster for more biscuits.
